Jim Cantafio ’76: From Backup Quarterback to Hall of Fame Coach
For Jim Cantafio ’76, success was never defined by avoiding adversity. It was defined by how he responded to it.
After graduating from East Stroudsburg University in 1976 with a degree in health, physical education, and driver education, Cantafio immediately began his career as a teacher and football coach. What followed was a remarkable 50-year coaching career, induction into multiple halls of fame, and the creation of one of Pennsylvania’s largest football camp organizations.
But one of the most important lessons of his life came before any of those accomplishments.
It happened at ESU.
A member of the Warriors undefeated 1975 football team, Cantafio began his collegiate career as a starting quarterback. During the 1974 season, he and fellow quarterback Mike Terwilliger ’78 shared playing time, rotating throughout the year as both competed for the position. Entering the 1975 season, Terwilliger earned the starting role, and Cantafio moved into the backup position. Suddenly, the quarterback who expected to lead the team was standing on the
sidelines.
“At one point in time when I lost that quarterback’s job, I thought I was going to quit,” Cantafio said. “But fortunately, I persevered.”
Looking back, he credits that experience with teaching him a lesson that shaped the rest of his life.
“It taught me to never quit and to fight for what I wanted,” he said.
That mindset carried him through every stage of his career.
Immediately after graduation, Cantafio accepted a position teaching health and physical education while serving as an assistant football coach. He later became a head football coach at just 24 years old, an uncommon achievement at the time.
Over the next five decades, he built a reputation as one of Pennsylvania’s most
respected football coaches, leading programs to championships and helping develop countless student-athletes.
“Anybody that knows Jim Cantafio knows what a competitor I am,” he said. “Nobody’s going to outwork me. Nobody’s going to put in more time than I am going to put in.”
His passion for coaching eventually evolved into entrepreneurship. In the early 1980s, Cantafio began organizing football camps, initially as a way to continue developing athletes during the offseason. What started as a small operation grew into Susquehanna Valley Sports, now one of the largest football camp organizations in Pennsylvania.
Today, the organization hosts dozens of team camps and instructional programs each year, including camps held at ESU.
Despite his many accomplishments, Cantafio is quick to point out that success is never achieved alone.

He credits much of his journey to the support of family, assistant coaches, and mentors, especially legendary ESU football coach Denny Douds.
“He did so much for me,” Cantafio said. “He helped me in every job that I ever got.”
Cantafio also credits his wife, Tracy, who recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary, for supporting him through the highs and lows of coaching and business
ownership.
“If it wasn’t for my wife, Tracy, I’d never be here right now,” he said.
Even after retiring from coaching, Cantafio remains deeply connected to ESU. He continues to support the university through football camps, sponsorships, and alumni
events.
“There’s nothing I won’t do,” he said. “I bleed red and black just like a lot of the alumni do. ESU is a special place for me.”
His advice to today’s students reflects the same lesson he learned as a young quarterback more than 50 years ago.
“Go for it,” Cantafio said. “Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t. Strive to be the best that you can be. There are going to be good times and there are going to be trying times. You just have to push through the trying times, believe in yourself, and keep moving forward.”
For Cantafio, that simple philosophy transformed a setback into a lifetime of success.
And it all started at ESU.

Evan Simon's Six Passing TDs Spark Temple to 42-10 Win at UMass
AMHERST, Mass. – Evan Simon spent the better part of three weeks sleeping at Temple’s Edberg-Olson Hall football facility as he competed for the Owls’ staring quarterback job. Even if it meant overnights on an air mattress in a team meeting room, it looks like it was worth it.
