CANTAFIO RETIRING (5).png

August 8, 2022

It's Time.

After 58 yrs, I’m finally taking the Fall off.

The playing & coaching days are over. I loved every minute. I will miss the Friday night rush, but not the grind.

Best of luck to the coaches & players who will be kicking off a new season today.

Time to enjoy life.

Coach Cantafio

Home Sweet Home: Kenny Pickett, Once a Pitt Panther, Now a Great Fit For Steelers

When you run a well-functioning organization with a tenured head coach and a smart offensive coordinator, the trepidation of a so-called down market for collegiate quarterbacks doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing to you.

This is, at least, the philosophy by which the Steelers selected Kenny Pickett on Thursday. At pick No. 20, its original pick, Pittsburgh simply waited as a handful of quarterback-needy teams entertained and passed potential fits. The Steelers came into the draft with only Mitchell Trubisky as a long-term succession plan, having ignored a replacement for Ben Roethlisberger in each of the previous few drafts despite his obvious signs of aging. And, with all the excitement of a short, ho-hum slog to the refrigerator, they took a quarterback they’ll probably have running their offense capably for the next decade.

Such is life for Pittsburgh, which is among a small handful of teams that manage to find ideal synergy between ownership and personnel. Synergy between personnel and coaching. Synergy between coaching and the locker room.

MID-PENN QUARTERBACKS TO KEEP AN
EYE ON

PENN LIVE- Brian Linder

Stone Saunders and Alex Erby dominate the headlines and with good reason.

Saunders, Bishop McDevitt’s standout 2025 quarterback, is one of the best in the country for his class, and Erby, Steel-High’s 2024 standout, can say the same about his class. And that is why college scouts are making sure to stop in at Steelton and over at 1 Crusader Way when they trek through central Pa.

Jim Cantafio is Far From Done with Football

WITH COACHING THOUGH, HE'S HAD ENOUGH.

Jim Cantafio still loves football. Loves it too much possibly. As for the stress of Friday nights and the workload of preparing for them, he's had enough.

Coatesville’s Ortega Goes Out One of Most Successful PA QBs of All Time

This is a great place to add a tagline.

It is going to feel weird next season, watching a quarterback not named Ricky Ortega take snaps for Coatesville.

It’s going to be even more surreal for Coatesville coach Matt Ortega.

“It didn’t really hit me until (Saturday) morning,” Said Matt, Ricky’s father. “When you look back at it, he’s been on the sidelines with me every single game that I was at Coatesville and even my last year at York.”

The Ortega family arrived to Coatesville in 2009, and when little Ricky grew into a freshman starter in 2016, the program began to rise to the highest heights.
